Harm Reduction: a workshop for people who speak movement
Friday, April 4th at 6-8pm ET on Zoom or via Recording

This workshop is about cueing movement. We will be examining the things we say as facilitators and unpacking their intended and unintended effects. This workshop is designed to provide tools for you to question your own training and pedagogical habits in order to expand the potential of your practice to be affirming for your clientele. We will explore strategies of positive cueing, scaffolding and sequencing, cross-referencing connotations of language inside and outside of the studio, centering the 'why', and more.
This workshop is designed for people who teach or facilitate movement (ex. Pilates, yoga, dance, dance movement therapy, fitness, or other somatic forms). However, anyone interested in movement, language, and facilitation is welcome.
Ongoing Offerings
Mentorship
I offer individualized mentoring to new and in-training Pilates instructors who are looking for guidance around cueing, space holding, biomechanics, adapting Pilates choreography to support diverse populations, touch and consent, client collaboration, supporting folks with chronic pain or post-op rehabilitation, and more.
I also offer mentoring for experienced instructors who may be looking to begin or continue the process of unpacking biases and exclusionary methodology embedded in their practice. We will work together repattern habits and create new protocols. I will also work with you as a supervisor while you work with queer and trans folks or help people through surgical recovery.

Virtual. Sliding scale $75-200 per hour.

Continuing Ed Workshops for Movement Professionals
Queer & Trans Affirming Pilates Workshop for Somatic Professionals
Inclusive language and cueing in the Pilates studio are always important.

Sofia Engelman walks you through how to take a closer look at the use of pronouns, being sensitive to how you address certain body parts, and how to be more mindful in relating to those who have body dysphoria, have had or are contemplating gender-affirming surgery, and ways to create a safe environment in the studio to foster trust.

Topics include assessment protocols along with movement sequences designed for pre- and post top surgery. In-depth discussion of cueing language and non-invasive touch are tools that will put all clients at ease, while providing instructors new ways of thinking about and supporting those in the queer and trans community who might find the studio environment intimidating.

This workshop will help you to serve the trans and queer population in your community in a respectful and caring way.
